SES - Transition Update September 2023

SES Transition to QPS

As you know, we are working towards transitioning SES to QPS no later than 1 July 2024.

Training Townhalls

Last month saw us hold a number of Townhalls. The purpose of these Townhalls is to seek feedback, so we can improve how training occurs within SES in the future. These improvements will form part of the broader emergency services reform, with regional feedback and findings informing the design of the future training approach for SES. You can watch the recordings of the other Townhalls on the ForGov page here.  Further information about our training approach will be provided through the SES Newsletter and upcoming Townhall meetings. Your local Change Champion will also provide updates as the training approach is defined and progresses.

Local Government engagements

We have continued to engage with Local Governments about the disaster and emergency services reforms this month. As you know, SES will remain a shared responsibility between the State Government and local councils. This partnership is highly effective in protecting and supporting communities during natural disasters and emergencies.

Here is a summary of the engagements last month with DC Chelepy and A/AC Brian Cox:

  • Scenic Rim Regional Council on the 9th of August 2023
  • Ipswich City Council on the 15th of August 2023
  • Somerset Regional Council on the 23rd of August 2023

In September A/AC Cox and Steve Dabinett (Business Reform Coordinator) will visit:

  • Redland City Council on the 1st of September
  • Gold Coast City Council on the 6th of September
  • Moreton Bay Regional Council on the 7th of September
  • Brisbane Disaster and Emergency Management Centre on the 18th of September

We will continue to reach out to Local Government, as the reform progresses.

Change Champions onboarded and ready to deploy!

Our change champions came together on the 29 and 30 August 2023 to meet with senior leaders from QFES and QPS, and to hear about their vision for the transition to QPS. Change Champions will play an important part in the transition and will support your leader with messaging and information flow about the transition of SES to QPS.

SES Change Champions Workshop

Scoping our transition of corporate support and operational functions

Work is underway to understand the potential people impacts from the transition to QPS. This work will inform how we provide training/ support to enable SES to continue to operate post transition to QPS.

Unfortunately, this work has been slightly delayed, to allow focus on transitioning disaster management staff to QPS, which has been fast tracked prior to the storm and disaster season.

This work is complex, and will take time, but it is important we get this right. The good news is that we can learn from disaster management’s transition.

We will keep you updated as this work progresses.
