Together we can achieve incredible things for Queensland.
The Craft of Public Service: Induction Program is designed to introduce you to the foundations of being a public service professional.
When we talk about the craft, we're recognising the depth, complexity, and purpose of the work that we do, the discipline and the practice that it entails.
Public service is a profession one that requires a unique set of skills, values, and mindsets that we build and refine over time.
Whether you're shaping public policy, supporting frontline services, or working behind the scenes, the craft is what guides us and ultimately delivers the best outcomes for Queensland.
In its simplest form, it's about serving with integrity, professionalism, and a deep commitment
to providing value to the public.
This program focuses on developing a shared understanding of the foundations of what it means to work with purpose in government.
It's your first step in becoming a professional public servant.
Working in the Queensland public sector is a chance to grow, connect, and contribute to something bigger than yourself.
Your journey ahead will be one of continuous learning through formal training, on-the-job experiences and more.
Over time, you'll develop your craft, gain new skills, and be supported to make ethical decisions and provide evidence-based advice.
I hope you enjoy the program and I encourage you to take advantage of every opportunity the public sector offers you to grow as an individual and help shape Queensland's future.
Welcome to the Queensland public sector—Queensland's largest workforce. Being a public servant is more than a job. It’s an opportunity to deliver work that truly matters.
The Craft of Public Service: Induction Program is your first step into the Queensland public sector. Across four short modules (each around 20–30 minutes), the program will introduce you to the foundations of being a public service professional.
What is ‘the craft of public service’?
Just like any profession, working in government requires a unique set of capabilities. When we talk about the craft, we are recognising the essential knowledge, skills and mindsets that every public servant needs to deliver services to our Queensland communities.
The craft of public service brings these capabilities together. No matter your role in government, the craft ensures that we serve with integrity, professionalism and a deep commitment to the public good.
Who is the program for?
This program is for anyone starting or continuing their career in the Queensland public sector; whether you’re new to government, returning after time elsewhere or looking to refresh your understanding of how the public sector works.
What does the program cover?
This induction program introduces you to the foundations of public service. It provides a common starting point for understanding what it means to serve Queenslanders with integrity, professionalism, and purpose.
The program puts all Queensland public servants on the same page by:
- discussing the essential skills, values, responsibilities and mindsets that underpin public service
- providing an understanding on the organisational structure of the Queensland public sector and how your role contributes to delivering for Queensland’s future
- offering short, digestible modules that are quick to complete
- delivering complementary learning that enhances, rather than replaces, your agency’s exiting onboarding processes.
Throughout your career, you’ll build on this foundation by expanding your knowledge and developing your skills through practice and on-the-job experience.
