October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month

National Cyber Security Awareness Month is a timely reminder of the importance of protecting our organisation, colleagues, and communities from cyber threats.

This year’s theme, ‘Building our cyber safe culture’, encourages us to embed cyber safety into everything we do—not just as individuals, but at work as well.

As Queensland public sector employees, the systems we use and the information we handle are critical to delivering essential services to Queenslanders. Safeguarding this data and information is a key responsibility for us all.

This Cyber Security Awareness Month, take steps to protect yourself and the information and systems you access at work and home.

Here are 3 key actions you can take:

1. Install software updates to keep your devices secure

When prompted, make sure you update your devices. Software updates address vulnerabilities and strengthen your device’s security. By installing updates regularly, you are locking the doors that cybercriminals may try to open.

2. Use unique passphrases on every account

One of the most effective ways to stay safe online is by using strong, unpredictable, and different passphrases for each account. A long passphrase of 4 or more random words strung together is a more secure version of a password, can be easier to remember and harder to crack.

3. Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA)

Enable MFA wherever possible to add an extra layer of protection to your accounts. MFA requires 2 or more proofs of identity to login to your account, just like adding a lock on your door.

By taking these simple actions, you are improving your online security and helping to safeguard the services we provide to the Queensland community.

Let’s use this month as an opportunity to strengthen our cyber security practices and build a safer digital environment for everyone.
