Introducing Queensland’s agenda for an even better public sector

As public servants, we are driven by a genuine desire to improve outcomes for the people, places and communities of Queensland. To do so, we should always be looking for ways to build on the capability of our public sector.

The Public Sector Act 2022 has served as catalyst for change in Queensland’s public sector. Recent independent reviews such as Professor Peter Coaldrake’s Let the Sunshine In review of culture and accountability have also been valuable in assessing our progress and looking for opportunities to improve.

In response, the new Even better public sector for Queensland strategy 2024–2028 (the Even better strategy) provides a dynamic five-year program of work aimed at addressing the opportunities to deliver even better services, advice and outcomes for Queensland.

Queenslanders are strong, and our public sector is no different. We are resilient and have proven our ability to band together and proudly serve as a united public service.

By seeking continuous improvement across all aspects of public purpose work we can make significant strides towards making our already high-performing sector even better.

This strategy builds on our sector’s strengths and establishes greater connectivity across transformational bodies of work for the public sector.

Grounded in openness, accountability and clarity of purpose, this strategy will:

• foster a deeper sense of integrity at all levels
• lay the foundations for robust and contemporary fit for purpose systems that are future focused
• continue to build public trust in Queensland’s public administration.

The Even better strategy aims to achieve long-lasting, systemic changes across three focus area:

Our work

Our ways of working will inspire trust in government.

This means we will be better connected to our communities and better equipped to respond to the increasingly complex challenges we’re sure to face.

Our workforce

Every day, our workforce shows up ready and willing to serve the common good.

This strategy will help us better identify future leaders and grow diverse potential to foster a workforce that is capable and ready to meet any challenge.

Our workplace

The Even better strategy builds the framework to ensure everyone working in the public sector enjoys a safe and respectful workplace. It will support our people to best serve their communities and make decisions that serve the interests of all Queenslanders.

Looking forward

Over the next five years, the Even better strategy will explore the gaps in our sector and new ways to close them. It will help us understand the growing complexity and interconnectedness of the challenges we will face and prepare us to better respond to the needs of our communities.

There’s already a true spirit of service that runs through Queensland’s public sector. This strategy will help shape that spirit into even greater strength.
