QRA - Get Ready Week underway in Queensland

On Monday 9 October the Reform Implementation Taskforce had the privilege of being involved in the Get Ready Queensland Week campaign launch at Suncorp Stadium. The Get Ready Queensland program is a year round, all hazards, resilience building initiative coordinated by the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) to help Queenslanders and Queensland communities prepare for natural disasters.

It was an exciting opportunity for emergency services to come together to share with the community the importance of being prepared ahead of disasters and emergencies.

Acting Assistant Commissioner John Bosnjak who is currently leading the newly formed Emergency Management and Coordination Command within the Queensland Police Service said while people prepare ahead of the next storm season, Queensland’s emergency services are doing the same.

“Our agencies are currently going through changes that will ensure Queensland’s frontline officers, staff and volunteers are best positioned to respond to emergencies and keep Queenslanders safe in times of disaster,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Bosnjak said.

“As disasters evolve, so too should the way we prepare, prevent, respond to and recover from them.”

Acting Chief Superintendent Rob Graham who also attended the event said Queensland’s weather can turn in a flash, so households need to be ready for the threat of bushfires, storms, cyclones and heat waves.

“Think about how extreme weather could affect your life–make a plan to stay safe and pack supplies so you don’t get caught out,” Acting Chief Superintendent Graham said.

He also reiterated the importance of local knowledge and expertise during times of uncertainty. "We are working closely with the people who understand their community best–local governments, emergency services staff and volunteers.

“We will rely on their understanding of their communities to inform how best to position the transition for success.”
