Celebrate International Access to Information Day 2026

Did you know the public sector plays an important role in protecting information integrity and promoting the availability of factual, credible information? The public sector serves the Queensland community and, through its work, makes a material contribution to combat information disorder.

On 28 September, join the global celebration marking International Access to Information Day (IAID). This year focuses on the increasing  dangers of:

• misinformation
• disinformation
• malinformation (collectively defined as information disorder).

In Queensland, the 2026 IAID theme is Fact vs fake: Tackling information disorder in the digital age.

Recognised by UNESCO, IAID is an official day highlighting the fundamental right of access to information and how it:

• empowers individuals and communities
• supports informed decision-making
• promotes transparency, inclusivity and social progress.

IAID is a great time to brush up on your knowledge about the right to information (RTI) and why information integrity, transparency and accountability matter.

Every year to mark IAID, the Office of the Information Commissioner hosts the Solomon Lecture. On 28 September 2026, esteemed journalist and media freedom activist Professor Peter Greste will deliver the lecture.

His keynote is titled ‘Journalists and Public Servants: Building trust in an age of misinformation’.  It will:

• challenge traditional assumptions about the relationship between media and government
• offer a fresh perspective on how both can contribute to public trust, democratic resilience, and a more open, transparent and accountable government.

• download resources for your agency to help raise awareness among your colleagues and networks.
• check out this video explaining why government agencies must make information available to the community, unless there is a good reason not to.
