About

Overview

Business Cases in Practice Online is a self-paced workshop that will provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to develop and analyse robust and effective business cases for your project proposals.

The workshop includes videos, with practical and reflective exercises, giving you the opportunity to apply the techniques you learn in a real-life context. The material is presented in an easy-to-understand manner and contextualised for the public sector.

This workshop includes half a day’s worth of content (approximately 4 hours cumulatively). The online content will be available to participants for 3 weeks after the launch date. Participants will also be invited to join our follow-up live Q&A session with the facilitator (subject to demand).

Topics covered

  • What are business cases about and why are they important
  • Various sections of the business case, including:
    • options analysis
    • risk and stakeholder analysis
    • cost benefit analysis (NPV, sensitivity etc)
    • funding options
    • recommendation.

Who should attend?

The workshop is designed to assist those responsible for project evaluation and business case development and review, including board members, chief executive officers, finance and treasury managers, and professional officers. No knowledge of the topics is assumed; participants with prior experience may find the workshop useful to refresh and extend their knowledge.

The QTC Education Program is only available to Queensland Public Sector Employees (this includes employees of the Queensland Government, Queensland government departments, local governments, statutory corporations, and other entities to the extent they have an association or are related to the State of Queensland). By registering for a workshop or webinar, you acknowledge that you are a Queensland Public Sector Employee. QTC/UQ reserves the right to unenroll any person that is not a Queensland Public Sector Employee from any workshop or webinar in the Education Program. If you are unenrolled from a workshop or webinar you will be entitled to receive a full refund of any workshop fees paid.

Outcomes

At the completion of the workshop participants will be able to:

  • identify the key inputs of a business case
  • reflect on risk and stakeholder frameworks
  • perform options analysis
  • understand a NPV calculation
  • defend a project recommendation.

Practical exercises

The online workshop has been designed so that participants can participate individually or in small workplace groups. Either way you can work on the exercises and reflective practices to develop and be able to analyse a robust business case. The exercises will provide a valuable insight into why and how a robust evaluation process is essential to ensure value for money.
