Contribute to SWE

The SWE is for, and built by, all of us—and we need your help to continue improving it.

We encourage sharing of feedback, learnings and insights from across government to help make sure the SWE is user-focused, relevant and evidence-based.

How you can contribute

Report a bug

If something isn’t working the way it's supposed to let us know by emailing online@qld.gov.au.

In your email, please include:

  • a description of the bug
  • steps to reproduce the bug
  • expected behaviour
  • screenshots to help provide context (if applicable)
  • environment—operating system, browser and version, SWE version.

Discuss components, patterns and page templates

Join the discussion about existing and proposed components, patterns and page templates by commenting on the issues listed on GitHub. Alternatively, you can email online@qld.gov.au.

For example, you can:

  • share examples, demos or use cases
  • share research
  • ask questions
  • answer questions.

Propose a new component, pattern or template

Check the backlog

Check the list of component, pattern and template discussions on GitHub to see if your idea already exists or has already been proposed.

If it exists, add your comment on the issue, sharing any research, examples or evidence you have to help support the idea.

Raise an issue

If your idea is not in the GitHub discussion list, raise an issue and fill out the details, following the template provided. A member of the Queensland Online team will get in touch to discuss your proposal.

At this stage, you just need to present your idea and evidence of user needs. You can include screenshots or links to examples of the component or pattern, but avoid spending time working on a specific design or writing code.

Design and develop

The Queensland Online team within Smart Service Queensland focuses on developing prioritised components, patterns and templates in consultation with our community across government. However, anyone can choose to work on something from the list of discussions on GitHub.

If you see something you’d like to work on email Queensland Online at online@qld.gov.au.

Join the user interface community of practice (UI CoP)

The UI CoP is where Queensland Government employees share and discuss our experiences, ideas and resources on user interface design and development (including the SWE).

We’ve adapted this contribution process from the UK Government’s Design System under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
