Intellectual property

Intellectual property (IP) is the intangible property produced by the creative and intellectual efforts of individuals and organisations. It includes:

  • ideas
  • inventions
  • designs
  • copyrightable material
  • trademarks
  • brands.

Each government agency is responsible for managing and protecting their intellectual property. The Intellectual Property Principles guide (PDF, 401 KB) will help get you started.

There's also an Intellectual property info kit available on the Business Queensland website, which provides more information on Australia's IP system and how to identify, protect and commercialise intellectual property.
