Business classification scheme

Glossary topic:
Recordkeeping

A mapping of the functions and activities of your business. It describes and shows relationships between your agency’s functions, activities and transactions (sometimes called subjects). It can help you establish a structure for titling records and makes it easier to find, share and dispose of records. The structure of the scheme is hierarchical, moving from the general to the specific.

The title you give your records according to your Business Classification Scheme can be known as a classification or file string (e.g. FUNCTION–ACTIVITY–Subject/Transaction).
